Safety

The safety of your child is of the utmost concern to all of us.  We ask parents to review these safety measures for children who walk to school or walk to their bus stop.

Look both ways before crossing the street.
When a signal is approached, wait for a new walk signal or a new green light, rather than trying to cross when the signal may change.
Use the protection accorded in the form of marked crosswalks, traffic signals, or crossing guards.
Cross only at safe corners even if it requires walking a little farther - especially in front of the school
Children should leave for school early enough to allow sufficient time, without running, to avoid being tardy. They should not arrive before 7:55 a.m. since there is no supervision on the playground until that time.
Avoid going into the street between parked cars.
Do not talk to or accept rides from strangers.
Do not bring skateboards to school.

If you drive your child to school please designate a location where you will let your child out and pick him/her up each day.  Pre-arrange a spot on the school side of the street only.

Traveling students will exit via Tulsa Street.  Kindergarten students enter the front gate on Tulsa. Kindergarten dismissal will be via the Tulsa Kindergarten gate.  All other students will use the Beckford and the Vanalden gate as recommended by our parent Safety Committee.  All gates except the Tulsa St gate will be locked during school hours.  Do not permit your child to cross mid-block or between parked cars.  DOUBLE PARKING causes a hazardous condition and is illegal. PLEASE DO NOT DOUBLE PARK nor use the parking lot as a drop off or pick up area.

Because of the active sports and physical education program, children should wear shoes, which give the best possible support.  SLIP-ONS, CLOGS, AND SANDALS are a hazard on the playground, especially in running and kicking games.  Thong sandals are NOT PERMITTED.  Socks are required. We will appreciate your cooperation in having your child come to school wearing appropriate footwear, which will enable him/her to participate in the playground activities.

Bicycles

Students in grades 3-5 may ride their bicycles to school.  Permits are available in the office.  Parents should instruct children about bicycle safety rules including the wearing of helmets, which is mandatory.

The School assumes no responsibility for damaged or stolen bicycles.

BIKE RULES:

   1. Students in grades 3-5 may ride their bicycles to school.  They must obey traffic laws
       and follow bike safety rules.
   2. Students must have a bike license and obtain a permit from the office.
   3. Students must walk their bikes in and out of the school.  They must lock their bikes and
       leave the rack area promptly.

Emergency Information

Accurate emergency information must be on file with the school.  Cards for this purpose have been sent home.  Parents should keep this information up to date by informing the school of any changes immediately.  Please have more than one phone number listed.

Releasing Children During School Hours

Children are not permitted to leave the school grounds during school hours.  If a student is to leave during school hours for ANY reason, the parent or an adult designated in writing by the parent, must come in person to the school office to be identified to sign the official release permit and to pick up the student.  The child will not be called out of the classroom until the release permit is signed. Please understand that we do this for the safety of your child.

Vandalism

Your help is needed in preventing acts of vandalism.  If you see any acts of vandalism, call the LAPD at 787-1122 or School Security at (213) 625-6631.

School Visitation Time

You are welcome to visit your child's classroom at any time.  You MUST check in with the office each time in order that we may give a visitor's permit to identify you to the teacher and to let us know that you are on the grounds.  This is important for the protection of your child. Children (including pre-schoolers) may NOT visit classrooms.  Visitations are limited to 20 minutes during class time. Parents who wish to volunteer in the classrooms are welcome, but pre-school children cannot be in the classrooms.  Volunteers also must sign in and out so that we know you are on the grounds.

No Personal Property Insurance

No personal property insurance is provided for loss of, or damage to, students' personal property (including bicycles).  Please do not allow children to bring valuables to school.  No toys, play, equipment, and/or games are allowed except on special occasions and when authorized by the teacher and the principal.

Lost Articles

Please be sure all personal articles (coats, sweaters, lunch boxes, etc.) are marked with your child's name.

Pupil attendance and absence

California State Law requires every child of school age to attend school unless they are ill.  When returning from absence, the child must present a written note from his/her parents stating the cause of the absence.  A child wearing a cast, using crutches, or who has stitches needs a note from the doctor and the permission of the principal to be readmitted to school.
