Philosophy/Mission Statement In the 1998-99 school year, Beckford became a School-Based Management School. Part of the School-Based Management program is to develop a Mission statement. Work on this statement is in progress. Beckford's Background Beckford Avenue Elementary was founded in 1968. Beckford is fortunate to be fully air conditioned and carpeted. It is receiving Prop BB money to remove and replace the roof. Prop BB money was also used in 1998 to add portable classrooms to support its increased enrollment. Beckford was recently painted. In addition, the playground will soon be resurfaced with a designated area for grass. Demographics Starting in 1998, Beckford is participating in the District's Class Size Reduction Program for Grades K, 1, 2 & 3. All the Kindergarten, 1st, 2nd and 3rd grade classes have 20 or fewer students. We are very enthusiastic about having this opportunity available to us. Much effort and thought has gone into making classroom assignments at all grade levels, as we consider the academic, language, social, and emotional needs of the child. Please note that there are many guidelines that must be followed, such as class size, gender balance, students with special needs, and academic ability levels. Because of the unknown number of Beckford School students moving in and out, permits, and CAP placements (from overcrowded schools), all classroom assignments are tentative. If there are changes to be made, we will do everything possible to make those changes at the earliest possible date. Thank you for your support and understanding in this matter. LAUSD
