::City of Angels School Overview

City of Angels School is the independent study school for the Los Angeles Unified School District (LAUSD) that offers K-12 students a full-time educational program through weekly appointments. It is designed for students with special interests and abilities, scheduling problems, or individual needs that cannot be accommodated in the traditional school setting. It provides a highly flexible, supportive, and individualized program of instruction and counseling to assist students in the completion of their education. Students are accepted at their own social, emotional, and academic levels of development, and are encouraged to maximize their growth in these areas. Students must meet course work and attendance guidelines prescribed by the state education code.

City of Angels School serves a student body drawn from a 700-square mile area made up of a mixture of semi-rural, urban, and industrial areas and some of the wealthiest and poorest neighborhoods in the nation. The school is community based and serves 40 communities from Sylmar in the northeast to San Pedro in the southwest. Instructional sites house 2 to 5 teachers and are located in community centers, churches, LAUSD-owned properties, and commercial buildings in the many neighborhoods in which the students reside. Each site has classroom space for every teacher and his or her students, student computers, book room, telephone, copy and fax machines, and a safety plan in the event of emergencies.

The City of Angels School grew out of a District need for an independent study program allowing students to continue their education outside the confines of a traditional, comprehensive high school. In July, 1993, the program became an official school serving a variety of students, including teen mothers, working students, full-time caregivers, students with special medical needs, students with social and anxiety disorders, and those whose parents wished to educate their children at home. City of Angels is accredited by the Western Association of Schools and Colleges (WASC).
