LAUSD TESTING PROGRAMS

California Achievement Test – 6th Edition (CAT/6)

The Los Angeles Unified School District administers the CAT/6 to 1st grade students to assess early academic achievement. Students are tested in English Language Arts and Mathematics.

English Language Arts Periodic Assessments (grades 1 - 10)

Students in kindergarten through 8th grade are assessed several times through the school year to determine progress towards meeting California standards in English Language Arts. These assessments are part of the regular curriculum and do not detract from the instructional program. For students in grades 2-8, the writing component of the third assessment is used as the Performance.

Performance Assignments

LAUSD administers Performance Assignments in English Language Arts to students in grade 9. This assessment of the writing process has the students work through the writing process (brainstorming, planning, first draft, editing, final draft), answering a question about a book that has been studied in class. Essays are scored on a 4-point rubic aligned to California Writing Standards.

Mathematics Quarterly Assessments (grade K - Algebra)

LAUSD will implement quarterly assessments in mathematics from kindergarten through Algebra. The purpose of these assessments is to help the teachers gauge student progress on California Standards in preparation for the California Standards Tests (CST).

Science (grades 4 through 8)

History/Social Studies assessments are scheduled for 2005-2006

Kindergarten Checklist

The federal law requires the district to identify students eligible for Title 1 services at Title 1 schools. One of the measures that may be used to identify eligible kindergarten students is the Kindergarten Checklist. The district developed this instrument which has been used since 1989.

Basic Elementary-Secondary Test (BEST)

For students in grades 3-12 who do not have standardized norm-referenced test results, BEST can be used as one of the assessment measures to identify Title 1 eligible students at the beginning of the year and as new students enroll throughout the school year. The BEST may only be used when no other norm-referenced test results (i.e. CAT6, Aprenda/2 or SABE/2) are available.

Aprenda

Aprenda/2 is the district required group administered norm-referenced multiple choice achievement test for students enrolled in Spanish Basic Bilingual or Spanish Dual; Language Programs. The test is administered during the spring semester and scored to national norms for Spanish-speaking students.
