Local District 3 Superintendent, Michelle King

Ms. King has been named Superintendent for Local District 3 of the Los Angeles Unified School District.


Prior to accepting this position, Ms. King served as the Interim Chief Instructional Officer, Secondary, for the Los Angeles Unified School District.


In this role, she was responsible for curriculum, instruction and assessment for over 170 middle and high schools and 64 options and alternative school programs. She had the responsibility for developing, with stakeholders, a new instructional reform plan for secondary schools that addressed the new graduation requirements and the need to significantly improve student achievement.

Prior to serving as the Interim Chief Instructional Officer, Ms. King served as the Deputy Chief Instructional Officer. Prior to serving as the Deputy Chief Instructional Officer, Ms. King was selected by Superintendent Roy Romer to serve as the Assistant Superintendent of Health and Human Services. She was responsible for health education programs, pupil services and attendance, student medical health, school mental health, drug free school programs, and integrated student health partnerships.


Ms. King joined the Los Angeles Unified School District in 1984 as a Health/Life Science Teacher and became the Coordinator of the Math/Science/Technology Magnet at Orville Wright Middle School in 1994. In 1997, she was named Assistant Principal of Secondary Student Services at Hamilton High School.


As Principal of Hamilton High School, from 2002-2005, Ms. King supervised the conversion of the Comprehensive High School into Small Learning Communities. During her tenure, student achievement improved in all subgroups as evidenced by growth on the California Academic Performance Index (API).


Ms. King earned a Bachelor of Science in Biology from the University of California, Los Angeles in 1984, a California Life Science Secondary Teaching Credential, in 1986, a Masters of Science Administration from Pepperdine University in 1992, and a California Professional Administrative Services Credential from National University in 1999.
