How Jazz Started

In the days of the Civil War, many African-Americans in slavery were not allowed to have many chances to play and enjoy themselves. When they did have a chance, like a holiday such as Christmas, the slaves had almost no toys and had a very slight chance of going to visit other places and family members. So they made up all kinds of music, dancing, and other ways to spend the time. One of the kinds of music they created was jazz. Jazz was a very energetic kind of music, and the slaves invented many types of dancing for it. Later, jazz became a primary source of entertainment during The Roaring Twenties. Many famous musicians also changed the way of jazz into their own special, unique ways. In modern days, Jazz is still a very popular form of music. In fact, jazz is one of the most liked kinds of music since the 1970Õs.

Famous Musicians

Billie Holiday is considered the greatest jazz singer.  Her life was marred much like her famous song. When she was little her father abandoned her. At some point in time her mother moved to New York leaving Billie Holiday with people who according to Billie mistreated her. She did work and schooling and in 1928 she moved to live with her mom in New York. At some point she was put in jail for prostitution. After 1930 she started singing at a club in Brooklyn and in a year she moved to PodsÕ and JerryÕs, a well-known club for jazz. In 1933 she began working at another club where a talent scout (John Hammond) saw her and right away made three recording sessions with Benny Goodman. These recordings made major music in between 1935 and 1942. Soon these recordings caught attention of other singers and soon they were working in HolidayÕs light.

Another of the famous jazz musicians is Johnny Dodds. He was a great clarinetist in the jazz music. He was born in Waveland, Mississippi. He moved to New Orleans in his youth and learned his clarinet from Lorenzo Tio. He became a great clarinetist and also performed his first band in Chicago called OliverÕs Creole Jazz Band. Also he worked really hard when he was performing his clarinet.
