Curriculum
English 6
Students in this course are
required to analyze, identify, define, explain and critique various
texts. In literature, students are introduced to various literary genres,
and it often corresponds to the unit being studies in history. Besides
being taught as a separate unit, vocabulary is also integrated with
literature. This course also focuses on the writing process and students
will write narrative, expository, persuasive, and descriptive texts
such as, folk tales, myths, essays, letters and reports.
Ancient Civilizations &
Geography
Students begin with a study
of the five themes of geography and how geography affects the development
of civilization and culture. Their adventure into the past starts with
an archaeological study of early humankind since the Paleolithic era
and continues through the major ancient civilizations of Mesopotamia,
Egypt, Greece, and Rome. Students analyze and interpret the literature,
art, music, architecture, and religion of the various culture studies.
The will also have the opportunity to create cave paintings, build pyramids,
read mythology, perform plays,and learn cultural dances as part of their
units of study.
Earth Science
This course studies various
aspects of the changing Earth, including geology, geological history,
fossil evidence, rocks and minerals, the Earth's crust, erosion, plate
tectonics, continental drift, earthquakes, volcanoes, mountain building
use of natural resources, ecology, weather, climate and the atmosphere.
Math 6
This class focuses on accurately
computing and solving problems using the four arithmetic operations
with whole numbers, fractions, decimals, and positive and negative integers.
Students demonstrate their understanding of men, median, and mode of
data sets and how to calculate the range through various projects. Using
real world situations, students learn to work with ratios and proportions,
and compute percentages such as tax, tips and interest. Students are
also introduced to the concept of pi and the formulas for the circumference
and area of a circle. Letters are used for numbers in formulas involving
geometric shapes and in ratios to represnt an unknown part of an expression.
Culture through the Arts -
Dance
This is a ten-week course
that focuses on culture through the art of dance, with a focus on Latin
American dance. Students will explore the history and traditions of
various cultures through dance. The Accelerated Reading program is incorporated
to increase and assess student individual reading and comprehension
skills.
Culture through the Arts -
Theater
This is a ten-week course
that explores the heritage of a variety of cultures through performance.
Students are encouraged to explore other cultural groups through poetry,
stories and plays. The Accelerated Reading program is incorporated to
increase and assess student individual reading and comprehension skills.
Culture through the Arts -
Visual Arts
This is a ten-week course
that focuses on the visual arts. Students explore art through a multicultural
perspective. The class also explores the works of various famous European
artists such as an Gogh, Monet, Picasso, and Brughel. The Accelerated
Reading program is incorporated to increase and assess student individual
reading and comprehension skills.
Culture through the Arts -
Music
This is a ten-week course
that focuses on the importance of music in our cultural life. Music
is the universal language interlinking countries of the world. The Accelerated
Reading program is incorporated to increase and assess student individual
reading and comprehension skills.
