General Guidelines for Windows 2000/XP setup
- Create a restricted user account which can not install software
for daily, online usage. You can still create docments, browse the web
and check email, but the installation restriction cuts down on
downloaded spyware, mallware, and viruses.
- Create regular system restore points through the Programs>
Accessories> System Tools>System Restore menu. You may need to go
back to these configurations when your OS has problems.
- In place of Internet Explorer, use Firefox or Mozilla as your web browser. Fewer security vulnerabilities.
- Download, install and use Windows
Defender.
- Do use free personal versions of Ad-Aware, Bazooka, and Spybot Search and Destroy. Support them if you can.
- Download and use the MS Malware removal software. See the Bazooka online encyclopedia and Spyware Guide for informaiton on specific spyware and malware.
- Don't download screensavers, shopping software, bargain hunting software, security tools, search assistant, search tools, ad blockers (Firefox and Mozilla already have good ones) or any other "free" software. They often contain spyware and malware, or simply slow your PC down. See the Bazooka online encyclopedia and Spyware Guide for informaiton on specific spyware and malware.
- Keep your antivirus software current with recent virus definition updates, and check Symantec for specific removal tools. You can also scan your PC online and run a security check.
- Keep OS system updates current, especially the service packs. You can set updates for automatic installation.
- Read Microsoft's Security Essentials.
- Backup and archive your documents regularly with software such as
7-Zip . For personal computers,
get a copy of Norton
Ghost (or similar program) and create a restore image file of your
PC regularly. Get a USB 2.0 external, backup hard drive. Some have
backup
software included. If you get just the USB case, you can replace the
HDD and store different versions on different HDDs. You can also
upgrade the HDD as prices drop and capacity increases.
