The idea for a festival germinated
10 years ago when I, Kirk Palayan, first started teaching the Computer
Animation class at King. After a few years, I felt I was ready to
make the festival a reality. When I spoke to Ms. Connie Martin,
the English Magnet teacher at King whose 8th grade students were
creating amazing projects called 'Expressive Poetry' films, I knew
it was time to have a place where the students of King would have
the opportunity to share their cool digital creations to the public.
So in June 2004, Ms. Martin and I decided to have the 1st Annual
Festival in the auditorium. We had three periods of animation and
film presentations to over 900 students, and it was a great success..
The following year, Mr. Brandon Cabezas helped to bring the Journalism
and Historical films into the festival, thus adding an intense and
important voice to the festival. Together we decided to take the
festival out to the community. With the assistance of the phenomenal
American Film Institute and some persistence, the 2nd Annual version
of the festival took place at the wonderful Vista Theatre; a beautifully
restored, vintage movie house in Los Feliz. The 3rd Annual Animation & Film
Festival returned successfully to the Vista Theatre on Sunday,
June 25, 2006 and also returned to King Middle School on June 26th
for the student body. On June 24, 2007 the 4th Annual version of
the festival was a success and King's student body had the festival
on the 25th. On June 22nd, 2008, Sunday, the 5th Annual version
of the festival was s wonderful success thanks again to the students,
LFIA and Mr. Lance Alspaugh. On June 21, 2009, the 6th Annual version
went successfully with the great support of Mr. Alspaugh and the
LFIA. It is very important to note that the wonderful staff at the
Vista Theatre, really make the event memorable, and none of this
would be possible without the support of Mr. Lance Alspaugh, to
which we are all indebted to, thank you Mr. Alspaugh.
