ABOUT OUR SCHOOL

Marvin Avenue School is a public, inner-city, Pre-K through 5th grade, elementary school located within Cluster 10 of the Los Angeles Unified School District. Designed to house over 1,000 students, Marvin Avenue School is filled to capacity on a year-round schedule. The grades span from prekindergarten through grade five, with three special education classes, LH and SED students. Also located on the Marvin site is Marvin Avenue Language Magnet. The magnet is based upon the European-Asian language approach to learning and offers instruction to students in grades one through five in English and one other language of choice; Chinese, French, Spanish, and Korean. The magnet houses 174 of the 1100 students enrolled at Marvin Avenue.

SCHOOL'S TECHNOLOGY


Technology at Marvin is an integral part of a multisensory learning environment. Students gain computer literacy while at the same time building and reinforcing grade-appropriate skills to be used in their curriculum. Students use this technology to develop communication skills through multimedia presentations and student's production of desktop publications. Marvin's current computer lab contains: 27 Macintosh G3 computers, 4 scanners, 3 ink jet printers, and 1 multimedia projector. Each classroom is equipped with at least one Macintosh computer and a printer. Software is available in all the curriculum areas.

ECONOMIC, ETHNIC, DEMOGRAPHIC PROFILE

Approximately 67% of Marvin Avenue students are Hispanic with 516 students identified as Limited English Proficient (LEP students). Approxiamtely 32% of the student body are African-American and 1% other. Many Marvin students live in single parent households and many are recent immigrants to the United States. Marvin's school population has been transient over the past several years with new enrollment and departures occuring on a weekly basis.
