MAGNET PROGRAM

PROGRAM OVERVIEW

The Marvin Avenue Language Magnet is based on a European-Asian Language approach to learning. This approach is unique in that it parallels the country of origin for each program, and raises the academic achievement of participating students by expanding their oral language experiences. The model strives to enrich the students' awareness and appreciation of language and cultural differences, helps them become effective communicators in both oral and written language. The school prepares students to become active participants in our increasingly multilingual, technology advanced, and multi-national world and business community.

PROGRAM DESCRIPTION

The Magnet is based upon four "Language Schools". Each school specializes in a specific language and culture, utilizing books, materials, activities, and educational philosophies that are drawn from the countryof the respective school. The four "Schools" include the School of China, the School of Korea, the School of Mexico, and the School of France. The four programs provide a unique eductaional experience that begins in the first grade and continues through the fifth grade.

PROGRAM GOALS

The curriculum in each School is directly aligned with the California State Department Curriculum Standards Framework, The Los Angeles Unified School District Course of Study and local School-level goals and objectives. The program stresses high expectations for student achievement. Thematic teaching, cooperative learning, and Core Literature are used as the strands to integrate the curriculum.

The homework policy, varied means of student assessment, and diverse and rich activities are consistent within each of the four Language Schools. Class work and homework is more extensive than most regular school programs and reflect activities and studies that reach the higher levels of Dr. Benjamin Bloom's Taxonomy of Learning.

The Language Schools, acting as schools within a school, provide all areas of instruction in English and in the target language.

CURRICULUM CHARACTERISTICS

The maximum allocation of time is devoted to the teaching of core curricular subjects. The Magnet is using the district mandated research based instructional programs in Reading and Math. Instruction in the "target" language uses a variety of teaching techniques that motivate and challenge the students while working within the philosophical framework of the respective countries. Parent participation is encouraged and considered an important factor in the educational process of each student. Class work in English as well as in the "target" language is challenging and encourages each student to reach and surpass his/her potential.
