Trivia Challenge - Question 10
Q:
In Big Tujunga Canyon, there is an area known as Grizzly Flats. It lies just on the other side of Mt. Lukens. How did Grizzly Flats get its name?
A:
Grizzly Flats was, in fact, named for the grizzly bears (ursus californicus) that roamed the area. The last known grizzly bear killed in California was in 1916 in Big Tujunga Canyon. Cornelius Johnson shot the bear on his ranch property because he, reportedly, was afraid for the safety of his daughter as she walked to and from Monte Vista (Sunland) School. The hide is at the Los Angeles County Museum of Natural History. Black bear, the grizzly's smaller cousins, still roam the mountains and foothills and occasionally visit homes in the Sunland-Tujunga area.
