Trivia Challenge - Question 17
Q:
The Tujunga Valley area was settled by people who turned the land into successful agricultural enterprises growing primarily olives and citrus, although other crops were also represented. Flowers also did particularly well in the mild Mediterranean climate. However, in 1936, one resident created quite a stir with a particular planting. What was it?
A:
In 1936, a local Sunland gardener was reported to have grown a "Darlingtonia orchid," one of only two specimens of the plant growing in the U.S. at the time. This rare plant is apparently carnivorous! It makes you wonder how many students came to school and reported that "a wild orchid ate my homework!"
