Trivia Challenge - Question 18

Q:

The community of Sunland was originally called Monte Vista and was a favorite recreational area for the famous and well-heeled. How did Sunland get its name?

A:

According to local historians, the name "Sunland" was borrowed from the brand name of olives distributed nationwide by the local Adams Olive Cannery! Sunland was originally called "Monte Vista." The Village of Monte Vista was platted in 1885 by Sherman Page and F.C. Howes who had purchased about 40 acres of the original Rancho Tejunga. While the U.S. Postal Department opened a post office there in 1887, they refused to name its post office "Monte Vista" as the name apparently conflicted with that of another development. Consequently, they eventually named the post office "Sunland," after the famous olives, even though for years afterwards the post office was still considered to be located in Monte Vista.
