Trivia Challenge - Question 22
Q:
Much of the early construction at Verdugo Hills High School was done by a group of men from the WPA. What do the letters WPA stand for?

The stone bleachers adjacent to the running track are just one
of the many projects constructed at VHHS by WPA workers.
A:
WPA stood for the Works Progress Administration, a program which ran from 1935 to 1943 and began as part of the efforts of the U.S. government to fight the effects of the Great Depression. The WPA put unemployed men to work throughout the country building over 78,000 bridges, 116,000 buildings, and 651,000 miles of public roads. By 1939, there were 78 men employed by the WPA working at Verdugo Hills High School. They built the athletic field, concrete walls, walkways, steps, a drainage ditch and installed sprinklers. By night, many of them attended classes at Verdugo's Adult School and at Glendale High School in order to learn skills with which they could land employment. Their stonework is still very visible and strong today despite the ravages of time including earthquakes, floods and thousands of students. Probably their most visible works are the stone bleachers on the east side of the school's athletic field.
