APRIL AND MAY  NEWSLETTER (English)

Dear Families,                                                     2009

Spring Break is always a wonderful time, and I hope this proves to be good weather for our families.
I encourage our families to have some “together” time.

As we move into last few months of school, teachers and students are super busy completing projects and
gearing up for STAR testing. Our STAR testing for grades 2-5 begins the week of May 11th through May 22nd. It is extremely important that students get a good night’s rest every night, have a nutritious breakfast and be at school each day on time. We would ask that you refrain from making appointments during the school day. Studies show that students who take the tests at the regular time with their classmates perform better than those who take make up tests. Testing will continue through Friday, May 22nd.  We will send home more information as we get closer to our testing schedule.  Attached you will find some helpful Testing Tips for Parents.  Use these as a guide to prepare you child for the intensive two weeks of STAR testing.

Also, please remember that construction will begin soon on the remodel of our office, library, and bathrooms. A portable trailer has been placed on our campus to house the library during construction. There will be a period of time of inconvenience, but we know that the end result will be well worth the short term inconvenience.

Our students’ safety is a huge concern at Winnetka, and the morning arrival into school is very hectic and busy.  We are asking for your cooperation during the morning drop-off.  The Valet Program is a simple and safe way to drop-off your children at school.  Due to the limited area of parking around Winnetka, the staff parking lot is for staff only—parent drop-offs are not permitted.  And lastly, please park and walk your children across the street using a crosswalk. Let us work together to ensure the safe arrival to and departures from school.

There are lots and lots of jackets, sweaters, and lunch boxes hanging up at the Lost and Found  Please take a moment to look over the items before they are donated to charity.  In the future, make sure you write your child’s name inside all of their belongings.

MAKE SCHOOL A PRIORITY – With spring right around the corner, it can be hard to keep children focused on learning.  What can you do to keep school a top priority for your kids?  Keep these simple ideas in mind---they’re useful at any time of the year.
1.    Make attendance job #1- Too many of our Winnetka students arrive to school late every day!  Not only are they missing on valuable instructional time, but they are also disrupting other students from learning when they frequently come in late.  We need to remind our children that unless they are sick, they must go to school.  Try to schedule routine dentist and doctor appointments after school hours.  If possible, take family vacations during school breaks.  And create some type of family award to recognize your child when they have perfect attendance or are not tardy.  Students should be in the classroom by 8:15 AM every morning.
2.    Show you car – Want your children to know you’re concerned about their learning?  Talk about their school activities and projects.  Attend as many school events as you can.  And reinforce the importance of homework by adjusting your family schedule so homework can be completed.
3.    Keep it upbeat  - Try to set a positive example for your child, even when your own day has been difficult.  Instead of saying, “I had a hard day at work.  I’ll never get my project done.”  Try saying, “work was hard today, but I made some progress on my project.”  If you model a positive attitude about your work, your children will feel better about their own!

DISTRICT WIDE EARTHQUAKE DRILL – DURING THE WEEK OF April 20th, we will be conducting an earthquake drill.  In the event that any disaster should occur while your children are at school, there are some important rules for all parents to follow:
1.    All school gates will be locked.  Parents are to go to the Request Gate in order to request for students pick up. 
2.    Once a child has been requested, runners will go to the emergency area on the yard.  The students will be released by the supervising teacher and will meet their parents at the Reunion Gate.

Greetings from our Winnetka Library! We have big news here. After many years of planning, we are going under construction to build a new Library for our school. Maybe you have noticed the trailer outside of the Library on the playground? That is the temporary location of our Library while we are under construction. The Library will be moving there the beginning of April. We are hoping to have a fully functioning Library in the trailer during the construction.
Why do we need a new Library? We have outgrown our old Library. There are not enough shelves for our over 8600 books. You may have noticed books laying on top of books on the shelves whenever you are visiting the Library.  The new Library will have story stairs for the children to sit on while they are read to as well as when they just want to read a good book. Personally, I am looking forward to having a real circulation desk in the new Library. This Library is being funded by Proposition K money.
On another note, I want to remind everyone to purchase a yearbook.  The cost is $17.00 cash only.  Your child can pick up an order blank in the office or the Library.

Stimulate your kids’ brain power, creativity and imagination by doing more of these and less TV and video games:
Visit the nonfiction section of the library more often.
1.     Read how-to books, joke books, biographies, mysteries, drawing books…
2.    Attend story time at the library.
3.    Become involved in a social cause as a family – soup kitchen, Pet pals, Habitat for Humanity, visit a nursing home regularly…
4.    Encourage your child to be an entrepreneur. Start a business to pet sit, do yard work, clean house…
5.    Encourage your child to build things. Tinker in the garage, build a storage shed or playhouse, buy toys that encourage construction.

A MESSAGE FROM THE PARENT CENTER - I would like to thank following parents who made all of the emergency buckets and did it with such willingness to help and ensure that our children will benefit from them:   Maria Castro, Maria Zamuria, Lorena Flores,  Belen Rangel, Maricela Ruiz , Zaira Miranda,   Martila Chavez, and   Juana Gaspar.



First of all, I would like to thank each and every parent, and community member, who came to read to our students on Read Across America Guest Reader morning.  It was a very successful event with many guests in the rooms reading Dr. Seuss stories and spending some quality time with our boys and girls.  Even our local FIRE DEPT. – Station 104 came and read to our younger students!  Our students loved the stories and the attention.
    Spring break is just about here and there are many things you can do with your family to make the time meaningful and educational Here are just a few suggestions:
 1. Visit the Griffith Park Observatory in Griffith Park – it is free but the movie inside does cost a small fee.  2. Visit the La Brea Tar Pits and the George C. Page museum – the tar pits are free to see but there is a fee for the museum (it is worth the fee – your children will love it). 3. Visit the aquarium under the pier at Santa Monica – it is small but very interesting and then you are right there at the beach so go exploring the sand – dig for shells, watch the waves or just relax.  4. Go to your local library – each L.A. public library has a storytelling time – it is free and your child can hear good literature read aloud and still have time to check out a book! 5. There is a website called “Kids Off the Couch” that has a wide selection of activities to do with children to get them away from T.V. and video games – check it out – most of the items do have a fee.
    I wish you all a fun and educational time with your children.  Last of all – spend some time just talking to your child – you can learn a lot about them and they can learn much more about you!

    In a time when people are losing jobs, money and confidence in their government, our school showed that we, here at Winnetka, still think about helping others.  We had the “Pennies for Patients” charity campaign to raise money for the Lymphoma and Leukemia Society.  Our poster child was a four and a half year old boy named Nicholas who has had cancer since he was 8 months old.  Our goal was to raise $700 but that wasn’t good enough.  We raised $1,508.61.  THANK YOU WINNETKA – YOU TRULY HAVE A BIG HEART!

BOLETÍN DE ABRIL Y MAYO (Español)

El receso de primavera es siempre un tiempo maravilloso, y espero que tengamos un buen clima para disfrutar con nuestras familias. Los animo a que pasen tiempo juntos con su familia.

Al entrar en los últimos meses de la escuela, los maestros y estudiantes están super ocupados completando proyectos y preparándose para los exámenes STAR. Nuestros exámenes STAR para los grados 2-5 comienzan la semana del 11 de mayo y van hasta el 22 de mayo. Es extremadamente importante que los estudiantes tengan una buena noche de descanso cada noche, que tengan un desayuno nutritivo y que lleguen a la escuela a tiempo cada día. Queremos pedirle que por favor no haga citas durante esos días de escuela. Estudios muestran que los estudiantes que toman los exámenes al horario regular con sus compañeros salen mejor que aquellos que tienen que tomarlo en otro momento. Los exámenes continuarán hasta el viernes 22 de mayo. Enviaremos a la casa más información a medida que nos acerquemos a la fecha de los exámenes. Adjunto a este boletín usted encontrará unos útiles Consejos para Padres en esta época de exámenes. Úselos como una guía para preparar a su hijo para las dos semanas intensivas de los exámenes STAR .

También, por favor recuerde que la construcción para remodelar nuestra oficina, biblioteca, y baños comenzará muy pronto. Se ha puesto un trailer portátil en nuestra escuela para alojar a  la biblioteca durante la construcción. Tendremos inconveniencias por un periodo de tiempo, pero sabemos que el resultado final valdrá la pena todas esas inconveniencias.

La seguridad de nuestros estudiantes es una gran preocupación en Winnetka, y las llegadas en la mañana son muy agitadas y apuradas. Queremos pedirle su cooperación en este asunto. Hay muchas chaquetas, sweaters, y loncheras en la sección de  Artículos Perdidos. Por favor tome un momento para verlos antes que sean donados a la caridad. En el futuro asegúrese de escribir el nombre de su niño en todas sus pertenencias.
 
HAGA DE LA ESCUELA UNA PRIORIDAD – Con la primavera a la vuelta de la esquina, puede que sea difícil mantener a los niños enfocados en aprender. ¿Qué podemos hacer para que la escuela siga siendo una prioridad para nuestros niños? Mantenga estas ideas en mente---son útiles en cualquier momento del año.
1.    Haga que la asistencia sea lo  #1- Muchos de nuestros estudiantes llegan tarde todos los días! No sólo estan perdiendo tiempo de instrucción valiosa, sino que también perturban a los otros estudiantes. Tenemos que recordarles a nuestros niños que a menos que estén enfermos, ellos deben asistir a la escuela. Trate de fijar las citas de rutina del dentista o doctor después del horario de la escuela. Si es posible, tome sus vacaciones familiares durante los recesos de la escuela. Y cree algún tipo de premio para reconocer a su niño cuando tenga asistencia perfecta y no haya llegado nunca tarde.  Los estudiantes deben estar en el salón de clase a las 8:15 AM cada mañana.
2.    Muestre que le interesa –  ¿Quiere que sus niños sepan que usted está preocupado por su aprendizaje? Hable con ellos de sus proyectos y actividades escolares. Asista a cuantos eventos escolares pueda. Y refuerze la importancia de la tarea acomodando los horarios familiares para dar lugar a que se haga la tarea todos los días.
3.    Mantengase optimista - Trate de establecer un ejemplo positivo para su hijo, aunque su propio día haya sido difícil. En lugar de decir, "Tuve un día difícil en el trabajo. Nunca voy a terminar con mi proyecto." Trate de decir, "El trabajo estuvo muy duro hoy, pero pude progresar un poco en mi proyecto." Si usted modela una actitud positiva a cerca de su trabajo, los niños se sentirán mejor acerca de sus propios trabajos!


SIMULACION DE TERREMOTO A NIVEL DISTRITAL – DURANTE LA SEMANA DEL 20 de abril, tendremos una simulación de terremoto. En caso de que ocurra algún desastre durante las horas en que los niños estan en la escuela, hay reglas que cada padre debe seguir:
1.    Todos los portones de la escuela estarán cerraros con llave. Los padres deben ir al Portón de Reunión para solicitar recoger a sus niños.
2.    Una vez que usted solicita a su niño, los mensajeros irán al área de emergencia en el patio escolar. El maestro a cargo de la supervisión dejará ir a los estudiantes para que se encuentren con sus padres en el Portón de Reunión.


Saludos de la Biblioteca Winnetka! Tenemos grandes noticias aquí. Después de muchos años de planeamiento, estamos construyendo una nueva Biblioteca para nuestra escuela. Quizás usted notó el gran trailer afuera de la Biblioteca en el patio escolar. Ahí estará temporariamente la Biblioteca durante la construcción. La Biblioteca se moverá allí a comienzos del mes de abril. Esperamos tener la Biblioteca en total funcionamiento en ese trailer durante la construcción. Por qué necesitamos una nueva Biblioteca? Ya hemos superado la vieja Biblioteca. No hay suficientes estantes para los más de 8600 libros que tenemos. Puede que haya notado libros arriba de otros libros en los estantes cuando visita la Biblioteca. La nueva Biblioteca tendrá escalones para que los niños se sienten cuando se les está leyendo o cuando ellos quieran leer un buen libro. Personalmente, no veo las horas de tener un buen escritorio de circulación en la nueva Biblioteca. Los fondos para esta Biblioteca vienen de la Proposición K.
Hablando de otra cosa, quisiera recordarles que pueden compran un anuario. Cuesta $17.00, efectivo solamente. Su niño puede recoger una orden en blanco de la oficina o de la Biblioteca. Gracias y que tengan unas maravillosas vacaciones de primavera.

Estimule el poder del cerebro de su hijo, su creatividad, e imaginación haciendo más de estas cosas y mirando menos televisión y menos video juegos:
           Visite la sección de no ficción en la biblioteca más seguido.
1.    Lea libros Cómo hacer.., libros de bromas, biografías, misterios, libros de cómo dibujar...
2.    Asista a la hora de historias en la biblioteca.
3.    Involúcrese en alguna causa social con su familia – comedor de beneficencia, Amigos de Mascotas, Habitad para la Humanidad, visite un geriátrico regularmente…
4.    Anime a sus hijos a que sean entrepreneur. Comience un negocio para cuidar mascotas, hacer trabajo de jardín, limpiar casas...
5.    Anime a su niño a que construya cosas. Arregle algo en el garaje, construya un lugar de almacenamiento en el garaje o una casita para jugar, compre juegos que animen a los niños a construir cosas.


UN MENSAJE DEL CENTRO DE PADRES - Quiero agradecer a los siguientes padres que prepararon todos los baldes de emergencia y por haberlos hecho con muchos deseos de ayudar y asegurar que nuestros niños se vean beneficiados:  Maria Castro, Maria Zamuria, Lorena Flores, Belen Rangel, Maricela Ruiz , Zaira Miranda,  Martila Chavez, y Juana Gaspar.


Primero de todo, quiero agradecer a cada uno de los padres, y a los miembros de la comunidad, que vinieron a leer para nuestros estudiantes la mañana del Lector Invitado en la Semana de Leyendo en toda América. Fue un evento muy exitoso con muchos invitados en los salones leyendo historias de Dr. Seuss y pasando tiempo con nuestros niños y niñas. Hasta el departamento de bomberos, FIRE DEPT. – Station 104 vinieron y leyeron para nuestros estudiantes! A nuestros estudiantes les encantó la atención que recibieron y las historias.
El receso de primavera está casi aquí y hay muchas cosas que usted puede hacer con su familia para pasar un tiempo significativo y educacional. Aquí hay algunas sugerencias:
1. Visite el Observatorio de Griffith Park en Griffith Park – es gratis pero la película adentro cuesta un bajo precio 2. Visite el museo La Brea Tar Pits, George C. Page – se pueden ver las fosas de alquitrán gratis pero debe pagar un poco para entrar al museo (vale la pena el precio, les encantara a sus niños – ). 3. Visite el acuario bajo el muelle de Santa Mónica – es pequeño pero muy interesante y como va a estar ahí mismo en la playa vaya a explorar la arena– miren las olas o solo disfruten. 4. Vaya a su biblioteca local – cada biblioteca pública tiene una hora de historias – es gratis y su niño puede escuchar buena literatura y sacar un buen libro para leer! 5. Hay un sitio en la internet llamado “Kids Off the Coach” que tiene una amplia selección de actividades que sacan a los niños de mirar tanta televisión y video juegos – búsquela– se paga por la mayoría de las actividades.
 
Les deseo a todos un tiempo entretenido y educacional con sus familias. Por último - pase tiempo simplemente hablando con su niño- puede aprender mucho a cerca de ellos y ellos pueden aprender mucho a cerca de usted! 

Piense en algún gran maestro que haya tocado su vida. ¿Le gustaría honrarlo de alguna manera especial? ¿Que si le dijéramos que si honra a ese maestro también puede ayudar a juntar dinero para asegurarnos que también hayan grandes maestros en el futuro?
