Larry Higgins, Director High Schools/ Alt. HS
As Director of School Support Services for District K high schools, I am keenly aware of the challenges facing schools to effectively educate all students. The urgency of this challenge is before us as our students prepare for post secondary opportunities. Whether the choice is to continue their formal education, enter the work force or join the military, our students must qualify for any and all post secondary opportunities. As our school staffs embark on learning walks, the assessment of student progress and the examination of teaching and learning strategies, the answers to increased student achievement at the five comprehensive, one middle college and six continuation high schools, will continue to be found in well-planned, focused professional development activities. The results of our professional development efforts will be reflected in the number of students who are successful on the California High School Exit Exam and the number of schools that increase their Academic Performance Index scores.
Additionally, it is important that student learning occurs in an environment that promotes respect and understanding. While it is important for our students to read, write and compute effectively, they must also learn to resolve conflicts in a manner that promotes peace and non-violence. I am looking forward to forging a strategic partnership with administrators, teachers, parents and students that will address the social and emotional, as well as the academic needs of students.
