Up to eleven classrooms at each MSTP middle school are in the third year of an Los Angeles Unified School District study that is examining the use of laptop computers, electronic whiteboards, cameras, data probes and Internet resources to help students achieve in mathematics and science classrooms. In addition, desktop computers have been installed in other classrooms across the campuses to allow students greater access to this technology.
The classroom technologies have been placed at each MSTP middle school as part of the LAUSD Middle School Technology Project (MSTP) - a research study supported by a No Child Left Behind (NCLB), Enhancing Education Through Technology (EETT) grant.
The purpose of the project is to study the impact that integration of technology into middle school mathematics and science classrooms has on student achievement. Eighty-seven mathematics and science classrooms from eight middle schools across the Los Angeles Unified School District were randomly selected for the study.
To help students succeed in their schoolwork, every student at MSTP schools has access to many exciting Internet-based resources to reinforce learning in the classroom and at home. In addition, each students and teacher has an LAUSD e-mail account for communication with each other, the school community, and science and mathematics experts in the field.
Parents, family members, and the school community are encouraged to become involved in the education of their students. The MSTP program has booths at open house and sponsors MSTP Family Nights at each school. Here interested parties can view and use the technology used in the study classrooms.
