Gifted/Talented Supplemental Screening and Instructional Programs
Legislation (AB2313) makes it necessary to restructure the existing local school programs to meet the differentiated instructional needs of gifted/talented students. Programs must comply with a more rigorous standard that requires that programs be organized and differentiated as an integrated part of the regular school day. State guidelines require that differentiated instruction for gifted/talented students build on the core curriculum and supplement it. Differentiated instruction occurs when the core curriculum is modified and includes acceleration, pacing, levels of complexity, depth, and novelty with expectations for student production that are appropriate to individual learning interests, assessed needs, and abilities.
Schools have the obligation to provide educational programs that take into account each student's interests, talents and special abilities and to afford them opportunities for high-level thinking, creative expression, and self-understanding frequently at a learning pace beyond age or grade level as compared to that of their peers.
Three supplemental screening and instructional programs have been designed for identified students and for students who may be from any one of the
following groups: achieving, underachieving, potentially gifted, and talented in the arts.
