Extended Learning Academies (ELAs)

The Beyond the Bell Extended Learning Academy (ELA) is a a Saturday educational program at all Concept 6 middle and high schools for students in need of extra academic assistance in reading, language development, and math. Each ELA operates on Saturdays from 8:00 a.m.-11:40 a.m. and has an administrative team made up of one administrator and one counselor who work during the school week with students, parents, and classroom teachers to ensure that academic progress is being made.

The curriculum focuses on the High School Exit Exam requirements at the high school level, and reading and algebra at the Middle School level. High School students will have the opportunity to earn "elective credits" for their participation in the ELA. Counseling is available to students at both levels and the Academies are open to all interested students at those selected middle and high schools. However, if the program is oversubscribed, priority is given to students with the greatest need based on achievement.

A full-time Extended Learning Academy Administrator administers each Academy and works with a full-time counselor responsible for identifying and counseling selected students to participate in the program. This counselor also works with school staff to create and support conflict resolution, violence prevention, and academic intervention programs, and facilitates home/school communication.

The ELA Administrator also works at the school during the week and bears the responsibility for assisting the students who need help most and linking them with support services. This Administrator is also charged with running programs during Intersession and is at the point for all initiatives related to closing the achievement gap.

Approximately 20 credentialed language and math teachers provide direct instruction at a student to teacher ratio of 20:1 in each ELA. They receive appropriate training and are responsible for communicating with the students' instructional day classroom teachers and the ELA administrator and counselor. The delivery of instruction at ELAs is based on the needs of the individual student, a prescriptive approach.
