Plans, organizes, and directs the daily workflow of activities in the District’s centralized warehouse and distribution facility including the warehousing and distribution of materials, equipment, food products, furniture and other commodities to schools and offices throughout the District.



       Plans, directs, and maintains an efficient warehouse operation and assigns, inspects, and evaluates the work performance of personnel assigned to the warehouse.

       Ensures District compliance with mandated State and federal regulations by directing the purchase, receipt, inspection, storage, cataloguing, inventorying, and distribution of stock commodities including materials, supplies, equipment, furniture, groceries, staples, produce, meats and surplus items to schools and offices.

       Consults with District administrators, managers, and supervisors to determine the feasibility of implementing studies and surveys designed to assess the efficiency of service and improve service levels.

       Evaluates and recommends changes in staffing, organizational structure, hours of operation, and other operational efficiencies to improve service levels to schools and offices.

       Organizes and manages incoming and outgoing shipping activities to ensure accuracy, completeness, and condition of items.

       Administers, supervises, and participates in the review of specification updates and directs the activities of the inventory control group assigned to determine packaging and delivery requirements.

       Directs the operational flow of food and supply orders from cafeterias and their processing for             disbursal.

       Develops, directs, and recommends the implementation of policies, procedures, regulations, and schedules relative to the handling of supplies, equipment, and foods and the maintenance of records.

       Participates in the evaluation of the efficiency of existing equipment and makes recommendations regarding the repair or replacement of equipment and the design and layout of warehouse facilities in order to maximize material handling efficiency and meet future technological warehouse needs.

       Evaluates and makes recommendations regarding the development, implementation, and enhancement of computerized inventory tracking systems and recommends technological modifications as needed.

       Participates in the development and implementation of security control procedures for warehouse operations.

       Coordinates the surveillance and investigation of stock shortages, deviations from specifications, damages to shipments, delivery of partial shipments and resolves discrepancies by following-up with vendors and freight companies and submitting appropriate reports.

       Serves as a liaison to administrators and other representatives of the Food Services Branch, the Procurement Services Group and outside vendors to identify concerns, develop feasible resolutions, and resolve problems.

       Evaluates the work performance of subordinate staff and recommends the selection, orientation, retention, training, promotion and discipline of personnel.

       Prepares oral and written reports related to purchasing, warehousing, and distribution activities.

       Implements procedures to monitor the receipt, handling, and distribution of donated materials.

       Performs related duties as assigned.



The Warehouse Manager is responsible for directing and overseeing a variety of warehouse operations and supervising a large staff of employees to efficiently operate and maintain the District’s centralized warehouse and distribution facility.


The Purchasing Services Manager directs the purchasing, inventorying, storing, and distributing of stock or nonstock items; develops policies, procedures, and regulations; directs studies to improve efficiency in material handling; and assists with the special development of computer applications and systems for Procurement Services Group functions.


A Senior Warehouse Supervisor is responsible for overseeing a staff of employees who perform a variety of warehouse operations.



General direction is received from the Purchasing Services Manager. General supervision is exercised over assigned warehousing personnel.


       Knowledge of:


            District warehouse methods used in receiving, inspecting, storing, distributing, and delivering large quantities of materials, supplies, equipment, groceries, staples, meats, produce, and salvage

Computerized and manual warehouse record-keeping methods

            Basic data-processing concepts and methods as applied to warehouse and inventory procedures Uses and characteristics of the District’s mainframe computer system, applications, and programs  related to warehousing and inventorying and of office computers and peripheral equipment

            Laws, rules, procedures, and practices pertaining to procurement, warehousing, inventory control, and materials distribution

            Regulations and practices pertaining to safe and sanitary storage and handling and distribution of materials, including combustible and perishable items

            Principles of warehouse organization and management

            Principles of warehouse safety and security

            Principles of training, supervision, and personnel development

            Techniques for instructing, delegating, and evaluating the work of subordinates

            Techniques for counseling, disciplining, and motivating employees

            Procedures for handling grievances


       Ability to:

            Use technology in the maintenance of an effective warehouse

            Plan and delegate work and expedite flow of materials

            Analyze work requirements and establish performance standards

            Analyze procedural problems and determine causes of errors or inefficiency

Maintain accurate records and prepare reports

            Supervise a large group of employees through lower-level supervisors




An Associate of Arts degree or equivalent, preferably supplemented by courses in supervision, organization, management, communications, statistics, and accounting. Additional qualifying experience in warehousing at a supervisory level may be substituted for the required education on a year-for-year basis.



Four years of experience in overseeing a variety of warehouse operations including the receiving, storing, and distribution of stock items for a large warehouse, including two years in a supervisory capacity. At least one year of the aforementioned experience must have included the application of word processing and data processing programs in the operation and maintenance of a centralized warehouse and distribution facility.


            A valid California Driver License.

Use of an automobile.
