Work Based Learning Programs

 

WorkAbility I (WAI), Work Based Assessment and GrantAbility are paid work based learning experience programs for students currently enrolled in a special education program approved by the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Student participants accepted in WorkAbility I (WAI), Work Based Assessment and GrantAbility may be assigned to either private sector businesses or non-profit organizations and will perform a variety of duties requiring entry level skills.

DEFINITIONS

A paid work based learning experience for students currently enrolled in a special education program approved by the Los Angeles Unified School District and registered with the State Department of Rehabilitation, through the Transition Partnership Program.

Student participants accepted in this program are assigned to a work location to perform a variety of duties requiring entry level skills.

A paid work based learning experience for students currently enrolled in a special education program approved by the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Student participants accepted in this work based learning program are assigned to private sector businesses (for profit only) and will perform a variety of duties requiring entry level skills.

A paid work based learning experience funded by the LAUSD Division of Special Education, District Office of Transition Services Transition Grant Program.

GrantAbility is designed for students currently enrolled in a special education program approved by the Los Angeles Unified School District.

Student participants accepted in this
work based learning program are assigned to appropriate work-based learning sites and will perform a variety of duties requiring entry level skills.


DUTIES

Each student participant may perform various entry-level work site duties selected to assist him/her in developing basic social and job skills essential for maintaining regular employment.

Students may participate in the Work Based Assessment program one time per school year for a maximum of one hundred (100) hours. A student participant is limited to ten (10) hours of subsidized training per week or twenty (20) hours for off-track students, totaling two hundred (200) hours as authorized by Department of Rehabilitation (120 hours for off-track students). Training is considered part of the school program, and may extend after regular school hours.

A student participant may not work exclusively on weekends or holidays. The hourly rate for training will be the current State minimum wage. The student participant is not paid when he/she is not at work. The training program schedule will accommodate individual students.

A student participant may not work exclusively on weekends or holidays. The hourly rate for training will be the current State minimum wage. The student participant is not paid when he/she is not at work. The training program schedule will accommodate individual student needs.


QUALIFICATIONS
-A student (age 16–21) currently enrolled in LAUSD-approved Special Education program.

-Willingness to participate in the WBA program as defined above.

-Authorized for WBA program participation by the California Department of Rehabilitation.

Current LAUSD enrolled in a LAUSD-approved Special Education program as designed above.

Student age 16–21 years old.
