School Based Enterprise

School-Based Enterprise

A school-based enterprise is a student-run simulated business/industry, conducted within a school. It is designed to replicate a specific business or segment of an industry. School-based enterprises are effective educational tools in helping to prepare students for the transition from school to work or college. For many students, they provide the first work experience; for others, they provide opportunities to learn functional academic skills and an opportunity to build management, supervision and leadership skills.

Purpose of the Program

The purpose of this program is to provide students with standards-based instruction in a simulated business setting. Job responsibilities and work skills will be developed while integrating the world of academics with the world of work. Additionally, social skills training, mobility training, decision making and self advocacy are all skill areas that are addressed. The focus of the program is active participation, class ownership, teamwork, and responsibility.

Goals of the Program

Students will:

  • Increase awareness of the world of work
  • Develop job skills in work setting
  • Increase pre-employment and independent skills
  • Improve social skills through teamwork and cooperation
