Welcome!
Research continues to show that small schools/small learning communities have the necessary elements to counteract the inherent negative effects of poverty and poor academic achievement for low-income and/or students of color. National research also proves that huge, impersonal institutions are the worst possible places in which to educate young people. A major premise of the transformation into small schools/small learning communities is that these issues will be addressed through visionary changes in public education.

380 SLCs in over 60 High Schools
As of June 2009, redesign plans from 60 LAUSD high schools and small schools have been approved by the Superintendent for a total of 380 small learning communities across the District. (Download list in PDF)

Student Empowerment Academy featured in LA Times article
 Based on the New Tech High School model, Student Empowerment Academy is a small school, with distinct attributes including project based learning, collaborative environment and 21st century skills. Teachers regularly collaborate and co-teach subjects such as English
language arts and social studies, consequently making the subjects more pertinent and relevant to
students. The article describes what happens when students and teachers are provided with a personalized learning environment.

SLC Plans for Kennedy HS and University HS Approved
Plans submitted by Kennedy and University High Schools became the latest approved by the Superintendent Brewer for conversion to small learning communities. To date, LAUSD has a total of 323 approved small learning communities in 53 high schools. (Download list in PDF)

Save the Date: February 27, 2008 Small Learning Community Winter Institute 2008
 This event will feature workshops with presentations from various school teams, community, parents and students on the topic of small learning communities at LAUSD. Tony Wagner of Harvard Graduate School of Education will be guest speaking. Tony Wagner is a member of the Change Leadership Group (CLG), an initiative of the Bill & Melinda Gates Foundation that helps prepare teams to be effective change leaders in schools and districts.
