VERDUGO HILLS HIGH SCHOOL
On-Site Council Meeting
January 29, 2001
3:30 P.M. - Room 127

MINUTES

The Calendar Committee gave its report to the SBM Council and it was approved. The report is attached.

Detention: There have been many complaints over the last few years that the detention program doesn't work. The kids never do the detention. So Mr. Martinez has given all teachers a list of students who have not served detention. Now we, teachers, have the opportunity to reinforce the detention program. If a student owes detention they should not have class privileges, no passes for example. Perhaps in the future, students who owe detention will not be allowed to play sports, attend dances, etc.. The detention program will be effective if we all work together.

Accreditation is the focus of the moment. The team will be here March 18, 19, 20. We must be ready.

Dr. Turner has left the house.

New Stuff. Fire alarm, PA system, intrusion alarm, wiring continuing, new stage lighting, outdoor basketball courts being resurfaced, multimedia academy opening in April.

Mrs. Hancock has accepted a promotion and will be leaving us February 9

Open House April 26.

Here is a synopsis of Ms. Peru's comments on student body funds, Boosters and movies: Student body funds cannot be used for instruction. The funds are audited on a regular basis. Ms. Peru protects teachers, students and the fund itself by providing an audit trail. Numbered receipts for all transactions. Student government meets twice a year to make up and review the budget.
Sponsors send requests to student government and student government doles out the funds as fairly as possible. The state ed code states that money collected on campus such as candy sales to students must be shared with the entire student body. Therefore, the activity keeps 50% of money earned and the student body fund gets 50%.

A movie history: the real estate belongs to LAUSD. At first, filmmakers had to contract directly with LAUSD real estate office and LAUSD kept all the money. After a while schools were allowed to directly contract with flimmakers for a standardized amount. Schools got greedy and the real estate office stepped in again. The school got got 50/o of the filming money minus the district's service charge, and the district kept 50% ( to distribute to schools that didn't film?).
SBM/LEARN schools can get waivers to negotiate directly with the filmmakers and keep the money at the school site. VHHS has such a waiver. The money goes into the Booster Club account. The account is sanctioned by LAUSD. The Booster Club Account has more flexibility than the studen body fund. Boosters can disperse money quickly if necessary and can support the instructional program.

We would like to know more about the Boosters. How about a newsletter. The Boosters do a lot of good things that go unnoticed. Support of Envirothon, Costa Rica trip, Washington trip, AP test fees are examples. We need to increase our awareness of what goes on. We need visible accountability.

A parent brought up several issues including the dress code and staff rudeness to students. The discipline committee will meet in the next two weeks to discuss the dress code. In particular, the present day fashion statements of our female students, and offensive symbols on clothing like swastika or confederate flag.

The discussion on rudeness was complicated as many staff members feel the students are rude outside the classroom. What can we do to solve this? Are clothing, manners and language all basically the same issue? Next meeting February 5.

Attending were: Ms. Peru, Ms. Hoelscher, Mr. Fahy, Ms. Doolittle, Ms. Dellepiane, Ms. Temsah, Ms. Delaney, Ms. Rennett, Mr. Omelas, and yours truly, Mr. Noyes
