VERDUGO HILLS HIGH SCHOOL
On-Site Council Meeting
November 5, 2002
3:30 P.M. - Room 127

MINUTES

Enrollment keeps rolling on. If we do need to renorm, staff positions and programs look safe.
Anne Weibly has been named Transition Specialist by the district and we were lucky enough to have her assigned to Verdugo. Don Alford will be taking Anne’s place. We have a new Spanish teacher, Daryelle Camacho, a new Library aid, Sheridan Manning , security aid, Anelle Visciano, and impact assistant, Nancy Perrier.

Our attendance has improved even more over last year’s award winning performance.

The intercom and phone system is on its way to being fully functional. If you are having problems please contact Hector Ornelas. The PA system was helpful in facilitating the teachers in an orderly lockdown on Friday, Nov. 4th. Provisions are being sought in case of future lockdowns that might occur for a longer period of time.
94/120 students scheduled for the CHSEE-California High School Exit Exam (If I see one more acronym I swear I will throw up) took the test. It was well organized and the students appeared to take it seriously.

Friday, Nov 8th is the homecoming parade and game. Good Luck against Grant! And the predicted mud. The dance follows on Saturday at the Gene Autry museum.
Bond money the school might get from the newly passed bonds are earmarked for a new science building that will house updated equipment. Also, a multipurpose room for meetings, assemblies, dances, testing, luncheons, etc..

It was further supported by site council that a copier protocol must be established. Quite frankly, as Regis Philbin would say “We’re out of control!” The OCE is old and tired; the machine in the library is new and tired.
1. Please save yourself work and let the office staff photocopy for you on the OCE. They know the machine and its idiosyncrasies well and know how to keep it happy.
2. Never copy books on the OCE, it not only scratches the glass, it pushes the top of the cover and makes paper get stuck.
3. A copier needs to be placed by the bungalows
4. Sorry, but as of Tuesday, Nov. 12th, no students will be allowed to use the upstairs copier between the library and career center. There has been too much abuse by students who are disruptive and photocopying inappropriate items like graffiti. This machine is breaking down even more than the OCE. Please honor this rule.

We are trying to keep as much access as possible while maintaining the integrity of the machines.
If you have any comments or suggestions see Martina Martin in the main office. You will be notified of any training opportunities.

Trash Talk: There is way too much of it! What can we do to get these kids to be responsible for their environment? Danny Lopez suggested we give the students a non-disposable mess kit that they can reuse and wash after each use. We need aggressive ideas and have to be ready to continuously reinforce them as old habits are hard to break. It was suggested that we not clean the campus for a couple of days and let the students wallow in it to see how much the custodial staff is taken for granted.

Have a great Veteran’s day weekend. Honor those who sacrificed so we can enjoy the position of only having broken copy machines and litter to worry about.
