      About District K

District K encompasses the cities of Carson, Gardena, Lomita, San Pedro,Wilmington, and parts of Long Beach, Harbor City, and Torrance. We have 48 elementary, 8 middle and 5 high schools that serve approximately 66,000 students. These are just the dry facts though. The reality is that District K is one of the most culturally diverse school communities in the Los Angeles Unified School District. The South Bay area offers a wealth of cultural, artistic and educational opportunity for residents and teachers alike.

Because of our close proximity to the ocean, there are a number of related museums and science centers. The Los Angeles Maritime Museum and Cabrillo Marine Aquarium in San Pedro; The Oceanic Art Gallery Museum, Aquarium, and Queen Mary in Long Beach; and the Roundhouse Lab and Aquarium on the Manhattan Beach Pier all offer unique and engaging perspectives on the art, life and business of the ocean. Lomita has a Railroad Museum and Westchester is home to the Western Museum of Flight. The Autry Museum of Western Heritage and the Banning Residence Museum are also very popular attractions. For those with a more artistic bent, there’s the Museum of Cultural Diversity in Carson, the Long Beach Museum of Art and the Museum of Latin American Art (MOLAA).

There are numerous colleges in the area, including Cal State Dominguez Hills which has one of the largest teacher credentialing programs in the State and a very close working relationship with our superintendent, Dr.Edgar Z. Seal. The University and community colleges frequently stage theatrical and dance productions, art shows and have a myriad of educational opportunities such as planetariums and observatories available to area teachers.
