Secondary Literacy Cadre meetings will be slightly different this year.  As you will see in the schedule below, only a few meetings are scheduled where all content area cadre members will be represented on the same day.  Most of the meetings will see a split between Social Science and English on one day and Math and Science on another day.  This is the best way to address individual department needs.  By splitting up during many meetings, LDE is hoping that there will be more focus on each subject area.  Cadre members will then become more knowledgeable in teaching literacy in their field and hopefully develop more of camaraderie as LDE has seen in the Math cadre.

The new English/Language Arts Instructional Guide and Assessments and the continued implementation of High Point and Language! in middle school will require the English and ESL teachers to have separate meetings for training and learning more about these programs.  Training dates will be sent to Literacy Coaches of each school.  If you have any questions or concerns regarding the ELA Instructional Guide and Assessments, contact Melina Castillo.

For Developing Readers and Writers Course concerns, please visit the DRWC Web Page of District E: http://www.lausd.net/district_e/resources/drwc.htm.

Middle School History Departments should be discussing how to help their students prepare for the California Standards Test that the 8th graders are going to take in the spring semester.  Although the Spring ’03 test results were only intended for use as baseline data, Spring 2004 test results count as 20 % of the school’s API score.  As suggested during the June 5, 2003 History Workshop at The Glendale Hilton when all Middle Schools were invited to send many History teachers, vertical articulation and alignment of the department needs to be going on consistently.  If the department needs assistance or support in any way, contact Delia Estrada or Melina Castillo.

Basic facts about the Middle School History test and the test blue print is here.

Test blue prints for the High School History California Standards test are here too.  Please use the Blueprints to update your History Pacing Plans.
