10 Tips for New Teachers:

1.- The 1st day of school sets the tone for the semester. Be firm, establish your rules, but make your students feel welcome.

2.- Have something for your students to work on during the first five-ten minutes of the period. This is usually referred to as dispatch. This will allow you to take attendance and disruptions decrease since students know what to do as soon as the bell rings.

3.- Assign homework per your department's guidelines. Grade it and return it to your students in a timely manner.

4.- If a student is a constant behavior problem, change his/her seat. This usually takes care of the problem.

5.- Follow up on your promises, including the one to send him/her to the office (do not overuse this one, though!).

6.- Call parents as often as you think it's necessary.

7.- Have a seating chart where you write points students earn for participation, notes about students, etc. Have a fresh copy of the seating charts for the substitute; middle school students like to change seats when they see a substitute teacher. By the way, at the end of the day, make sure you leave a lesson plan for a substitute in case you're absent the next day. You never know.

8.- Use technology to help you with your subject matter, to do grades, and to communicate with parents.

9.- Don't be afraid to ask for help; ask other teachers and your support group here at Gage.

10.- Enjoy your job!
