English Learners are students that speak a primary language other than English.

Responding to the challenge of diversity, the LAUSD and District K are committed to providing instructional services and experiences that will enable our students to live and function effectively in a diverse society. We must guarantee them equity and access to quality education regardless of culture and language background. The educational experience for each student must:

· Promote the development of English language and academic learning while recognizing and respecting the students’ primary languages and cultures.

· Promote the positive belief that all students are valued as individuals and are worthy and capable of learning.

· Increase awareness of the dynamic nature of diversity and acknowledge the complex elements of each person’s identity…

· Develop critical-thinking skills and academic language that enable each student to be successful…

Adapted from the Master Plan Revision Committee 1996

In this effort, District K reaffirms its commitment to providing all English Learners access to rigorous academic standards, and a quality educational program.
