Description/Components of District K Psychological Services: We

  1. Are a group of 46 credentialed school psychologists serving 48 elementary schools, 8 middle schools, 4 continuation/alternative high schools and 3 special education centers.
  2. Consult with teachers and parents regarding instruction and behavior intervention strategies for targeted general and special education students so that they can achieve essential California content standards. Additionally, we assist teachers and parents in the development of behavior support plans for students with school-related behavior management problems.
  3. Participate in the process for the identification, placement and reevaluation of students with special needs; participate as members of the IEP team and may assist in the development of positive behavior interventions.
  4. Conduct psychoeducational assessments of targeted underachieving students to determine educational needs; learning characteristics, strengths and weaknesses; and social behavior relevant to education placement and instructional planning.
  5. Assist in developing a written IEP for students who are eligible for special education services.
  6. Counsel and provide appropriate related services, such as Designated Instructional Services (DIS) counseling, to students individually and in groups in accordance with their IEP goals.
  7. Conduct psychoeducational assessments of targeted underachieving private school students.
  8. Conduct assessments of students who are referred by their local schools for gifted testing in the intellectual category.

Program Implementation: School psychologists are educators who are part of instructional support. They assist in identifying students who have learning or behavior weaknesses that adversely affect academic achievement and support teachers and parents in the development and implementation of academic or behavior interventions prior to and after referrals for, if appropriate, special education services. If interventions, all implemented and documented, are ineffective and an assessment for special education services is warranted and agreed upon, the school psychologist conducts psychoeducational assessments of targeted underachieving students to determine educational needs; learning characteristics, strengths and weaknesses; and social behavior relevant to education placement and instructional planning.
